True stories

  • about what really happened

My name is Demas. I was born in a village in the state of West Bengal in India. I was the eldest of three children. When I was nine years old, my father died. Suddenly we became poor people. We had many problems and life was hard for us. One of the hardest things for me was that I had to stop studying. I became worried and did not know what to do.

Sweets for the gods

My parents had always worshipped many gods. I thought I could find help by going to religious places where the gods were worshipped. I went to these temples to offer sweets to the gods. Many times I lit candles and prayed (talked to the gods). I believed I would get answers to my prayers if I did these things, but none came. Nothing I did brought peace to my troubled mind. When I reached the age of sixteen, I began to ask questions – 'Who is the real God? Where is he? Who made this world and why?' I also asked about myself – 'Who am I and why am I here?'

I could not find any answers to my questions from anyone, anywhere.

I was blind

Time passed. Then, one day, I received a paper from my cousin and began to read it. This paper told me that Jesus Christ is the only one who will answer all my questions and help me with my problems. I read some words from the Bible*. These answered my questions. That day, I asked Jesus to help me. I found that what I read in the Bible was true. Jesus Christ changed my life that day. It was as though I was a blind man before and now I could see. Jesus gave me real peace in my mind. He also showed me that, although I did not have my father here any more, God is my father. I will never be without a father again."

*The words Demas read in the Bible were these words spoken by Jesus:

"I am the way, the truth and the life; no-one goes to the father except through me."

"Peace is what I leave with you; it is my own peace that I give you. Do not be worried and upset; do not be afraid."

You can read these words in the part of the Bible called the Gospel of John, chapter 14, verses 6 and 27.
