It is necessary to become a member. However, it is possible to join at the time of arrival at a hostel and pay an additional sum a night towards membership at different hostels, until the full membership has been paid. Students with an International Student Identity Card may receive a discount.
If you are a member of the Youth Hostel Association in your own country already, then your membership covers you to stay at 5000 hostels in over 60 countries. If you expect to stay at a Youth Hostel here, join in your own country first if possible.

BED & BREAKFAST
'B&B' is a very cheap way to live. Around the country, thousands of houses and farms offer bed and breakfast. At busy times, it may be difficult to find a room without booking first, but at other times you can just knock on the door and find space.
Houses and Farms
Private homes and farms offering bed and breakfast will have a sign outside, which may read, 'Accommodation', 'Bed and Breakfast', 'B & B', or even just 'Vacancies'. Not all will accept children or dogs.
Most towns have a Tourist Information Centre. They can help you find 'bed and breakfast' or other types of accommodation in their area. Some also offer a 'Book-a-Bed-Ahead' scheme, so that you can arrange accommodation in a new area as you travel.
Bed and breakfast websites are included on our main page.
GUEST HOUSES & HOTELS
Guest houses are larger than bed and breakfast houses, but smaller than hotels. They will usually be cheaper than hotels. They may sometimes offer bed and breakfast too. Expect to pay about £20-£30 a night for a guest house, depending on area, and time of year.
Hotel prices will cost more, depending on season, and standard of accommodation. There are several websites which gives lists of hotel accommodation in Britain and Wales. Of course, being listed on a website, does not mean that they are the best, or the cheapest. Some hotels will have star ratings from the AA, RAF, or Tourist Boards.
You will find hotels and guest houses listed in Yellow Page phone directories (your library may have some). British Tourist Authority offices around the world may keep some lists of hotels and guest houses. Tourist Information Centres around Britain will also have details.

There are motels at a number of motorway service stations. Prices for these do not usually include meals (which would be available in the motorway service area). Forte Travelodge, for example, operate a number of motels, and charge between about £35 to £50 per night, per room, depending on area of the country. Each room has one double bed, one single sofa, and one pullout bed, and can therefore take 2 adults and 2 children, or 3 adults and 1 child. For several people, this is quite cheap.
Forte Travelodge offer a freephone booking service with UK on 0800 850 950 7am - 10 pm 7 days a week.
Other companies offer a similar service.
